First post?
I don’t know about higher education. If we move to America, I assume I’ll just go to college. If we stay here, after year 11 I’ll go on to Sixth Form, take A-levels in Music, English (writing), Physics, Maths, and maybe Chemistry. Actually, because most people only take three or four, I might skip the Chemistry. Or I might be special. I don’t know. If I do well in those subjects, which I think I probably will, at least in Physics, Maths, and English, I’ll probably apply to Oxford for a degree in Engineering. If I don’t get into Oxford, there are plenty of other Uni’s.
1 – That post is what makes you truly sound British.
I want to go to culinary school. But I don’t know where or what specifically I want to study (Savory or sweet). I don’t know if I’ll try to go to college before/after culinary school. I think that’s quite a bit of stuff to do for a person like me. I’m only [almost] 13, though – there’s plenty of time for me to figure that out.
I’m sort of in college right now. What I’m doing is closer to a college prep program, but it’s just for fun, I’m not getting any credits, etc. It’s an art program which allows you to take classes in a wide range of media, rather than having to specialize, so you can get a taste of lots of different types of art. It’s a lot of fun, and my classmates (all 19 of them) are great as well. We live in an old apartment building-turned-dormitory, which is an experience in making do and sharing with others, because the building’s ancient sinks/showers/anything else keep breaking. Which means that you either have to make do or ask someone to share with you. But all in all, college is fun.
let’s see, um, well i want to go to Cornell University, I’ll probably major in visual art, [unless some new interest springs up, but probably not] but i don’t know if i’ll be able to get into Cornell.
Less than five years until college, I think.
I’d like to go to music school, or art school, but I don’t know what types of them there are or anything. It still feels so far off..
I’m definitely going to College, though I don’t really know anything beyond that. I think I want to major in History, though I have absolutely no idea where. If you stack up all the letters I’ve gotten from colleges, it is probably at least a few feet. I’ve been getting tons of college mail, especially after I took the PSAT.
Ack! College? *is scared of high school*
College…
You know the really annoying thing about having a brother who’s only a year older than oneself is the fact that he’s got me worrying about college already.
Actually, I can only put off worrying about college for about six more months before my guidance counselor starts really pushing it.
Less than three years until I’ll actually be in college (yes, I’m a sophomore).
The problem is, I have no idea what I want to do with my life.
I know I want to go to Brown, Boston University or Dartmouth, but I don’t know what I want to major in. And my mom is (well, this is how it seems to me) trying to encourage me not to go to any of those three schools.
AHHHG. I am really disliking all colleges/ect right now. I have no idea where I want to go. Or do with my life. And I am effing sick of every single school working saying how we need to know exactly what we want to do with out lives right now. I just had to right the most idiotic paper I’ve ever recieved on the purpose of my life. I am [grrr] 16! I have no idea! I just wich these people would leave me the [explitive] alone. I am sick of this.
*crawls into chasm*
Uh, experience with higher education? Middle school, maybe?
9- You know what I hate? The incredible over-emphasis on leadership.
I am a member of the PWLE, or People With Lower Education.
i.e. I’m only 12!
11- At my school, leadership’s two jobs are as follows:
Organizing dances
Drawing stupid, silly posters that a kindergartner would be ashamed of
Oh my. I don’t know! My plan is this:
Possibly take the first two years of college simultaneously with Junior and Senior years of high school.
Get lots and lots of scholarships.
Go to a good college.
I’m not sure what college I want to go to yet. I don’t even know what I’m going to choose as a career.
13- Well, yes. But at my school they’re not so bad. A lot of my friends are in leadership, plus they bought me books after the fire.
I think their job is also to get people interested in the games, which I simply ignore.
I want to go to the University of Auckland, mainly because it is in New Zealand and New Zealand is AWESOME…
I’m interested in philosophy, but there are not a whole lot of things you can do with a degree in philosophy.
Many of the grade twelves I am acquainted with are worryingly blase about future plans. One says…”I dunno…maybe I’ll work for a year or go to the local uni…I got in…” But he’s also brilliant, and got accepted/ granted scholarships to loads of good schools, so I guess I shouldn’t stew about it…
What’s Leadership?
I want to be an editor, at least currently. But I’m not sure what kind of editing I want to do. I’m leaning towards book editing, but there are so many other editing things out there, too…
I get good grades and do tons of extracurricular stuff (hmm, let’s think. President and founder of Model United Nations team, Think-A-Thon team, [winner of 2008 competition], Scholastic Writing Awards 2008 Gold Key Award, 3 Choirs, Piano, Musicals, Art classes, chamber music, writing classes for 3 hours a day every day for all of high school, tennis, soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, sailing, volunteering at Children’s Hospital and an organization that sends books to prisoners, Meals on Wheels, NaNoWriMo and Script Frenzy, off the top of my head), so the main thing I’m worried about is the SAT. I got a 221 on the PSAT, which is 99th percentile, so I think I’ll do okay on the PSAT, but I’m still really really worried…
17- I want to be a YA book editor. More than an English teacher, even!
16 – WRONG!! New Zealland is a hole with crappy shopping and Auckland is a scary city. If you chose to come to New Zealand, I much highly recomend University of Otago as the city it is based in is much safer, and it has a really good night life.
17 – don’t worry, you’ll probably do fine on the SATs – I took them in 7th grade and I got a 1700 without even trying (aka I just filled in random answers)
I want to go to Williams because I will be a legacy child – my grandpa, my mom and my uncle went there, and it is a really good school!!!
I don’t know where I want to go, but I want to do something in aviation, preferably being a pilot. Hopefully I’ll end up with enough money to go to college to be a pilot, because I’m definiteley not joining the military unless we have no other way to pay for college.
I loves planessss!
Bleahhh. I hated those stupid leadership things. First of all just because someone has been appointed leader of something in high school does not mean that he/she is a good leader. And just because someone has not been a leader of something, that doesn’t have any bearing on their academic performance.
2- Here you wouldn’t have plenty of time to figure it out. I’m thirteen as well, and next year we pick options for GSCE’s, which means you narrow down to about nine subjects, I think, study those for two years, take the tests, then narrow it down to three or four, study those for two years, take the tests, pick one to carry on with. So, by the time you’re fourteen, you need a pretty clear idea of where you’re going.
22 – That’s so weird. Your mind is bound to change, is it not?
But then again, do they have GCSEs for cooking? Food technology DOES NOT COUNT AS COOKING. Neither does Home Ec. Would a British person who wants to be a chef have to settle for Food Technology and figure out cooking somehow else? I hope not.
Does anyone else on the blog want to be a chef? Or is anyone a chef, for that matter?
Here’s my ideal academic life from now (not mentioning grades and assuming I do well at everything. Which is everything but guaranteed.):
1. I finish 7th grade
2. I start and finish 8th grade, graduating from middle school
3. I go to the creative and performing arts high school for visual arts (4 years)
4. I go to college for at least 2 years learning, uh, chemistry. And visual arts. And something else I’m interested in and can’t think of. Ah – musical theatre. That’d be quite a school to give me a decent education in all of those. Hehe. Well, that’s a while in the future. It’s only 2 years because I don’t want to go through my whole life before going to culinary school.
5. I go to culinary school. Hopefully a good one. And I’ll totally understand everything because I’ll have been learning chemistry.
6. I work for a professional chef. A good one, ideally. Well, obviously he/she’s not going to be bad, seeing as he/she’s a professional that has someone working for him/her.
7. I, uh, haven’t gotten that far in my fantasies. I open my own restaurant? Maybe…
My ideal academic life?
1. Finish 8th grade with a 4.0
2. Go to 4-year high school and get all A’s
3. Not kill myself in Driver’s Ed (in senior year, I’m only 11)
4. Go to 4 years of college studying chemistry
5. Get a Ph.D
6. Get a master’s degree
7. Go to medical school (optional)
8. Get an internship at, er, Berkeley or somewhere there is a lab
9. Become a full-time chemist
10. Wait…
This isn’t my academic life, is it? Nah. It’s going to be my whole life. Drat.
It’s interesting. A while ago, only the really rich could attend college because it was so expensive. Then, the prices went down, and, since basically everybody could afford college, a college education was nearly required. Now, the prices are skyrocketing, but a college education is required for everything.
*ponders*
My ideal academic life?
hmm..
1. Finish 10th grade while remaining on honor roll.
2. Become an officer of FNHS (French National Honor Society).
3. Go to CTY for my last time (over the summer).
4. Take Driver’s Ed starting in September.
5. Join Class Act at my school as a techie.
6. Finish 11th grade with all A’s.
7. Finish senior year (and graduate) with all A’s.
8. Go to Brown, Dartmouth, or Boston University studying…
Well, I don’t know anything after that.
I wish I could go to Muse Academy for high school/college.
Continuing my last post…
There are several possibilities. I could go for a career in: chemistry, math, writing, music, film, or languages.
27 – Me too! Wouldn’t that be just swell? Uh-oh. I’m becoming Disney-ish…
Ack, I still have no idea. Currently, my academic plans are:
1. Get a good, happy score on the SATs
2. Get into a good, happy college/university.
3. Graduate High School with high honors, etc.
4. Go to good happy university studying History, probably.
5. Graduate good happy university and lead a good and happy life.
27 – Don’t we all?
All I want out of my education is for it to give me enough footing to have a good career in food.
31 – You should probably take cooking classes outside of school then, since I seem to recall that the only class in MS/HS that has anything to do with cooking is Home Ec, and that’s not exactly taken too seriously.
23- Well, Food Tech at my school is cooking – I think there is a just cooking one you can take as well, I don’t know. At A-level, I’m pretty sure you can take cooking.
27~ Same.
I dunno. I know that I want to be able to do something with history and music, prefrebly together. If I can somehow squeeze tall ships into that, I’m all set. I’ll probably go to our community college for at least a bit, because they have a program for local homeschooling families. I won’t have a high school diploma, but I can go to the com. College, and then transfer if I decided that that’s what I want to do. As far as college choices to transfer to, I have no idea.
The whole thought of college scares the heck out of me.
COLLEGE??? I’ll be *counts on fingers* sixteen then!!! I’ll be OLD!!!
35 – Um, most people are 18 when they go to college. Unless they’ve skipped two grades sometime in their school career.
36 – I did skip two grades. Thanks for clarifying that.
I just reread my post. Sorry for the double post, but
I sound like my (very sarcastic) classmates, Sam and Reid. (Neither of them know Muse.)
My mom skipped her senior year and went straight to college, and now she owns a technology company. It’s amazing.
I don’t get to skip any grades.
My ideal academic career=
1-Not explode or drown in homework
2-Start flight school before junior year
3-Finish high school with honors, if not valedictorian.(judging by my mass of Bs and a possible C, not valedictorian)
4-Go to college for aviation, full instrument and night ratings.
5-Be a pilot for a shipping or other line, or a flight instructor.
Hopefully I’ll be able to afford not joining the Air Force. I know that it’s a cheap way to get trained, but I would never forgive myself for supporting an army.
I support the soldiers, and I want them to get home safely, but I don’t support war or the formation of militaries.
I’ve determined I’m probably staying in California for college, but I’m not sure where yet…of course it depends how my grades go, but I’m thinking one of the Claremont Colleges (Pomona, maybe Scripps, others…), though Occidental sounds really nice right now. Also considering UC Irvine, and should I ever have the grades, Berkeley.
Liberal arts is the way for me. I require that they offer Japanese though. I don’t know how I feel about going to a women’s college though. Hmmm. Well time will tell with everything I suppose, I’m almost done with sophomore year as it is.
37 – Whoa, nice! I was considering skipping 9th grade myself, but decided against it because it meant that I’d have to take an English class during one of my summers (need 4 english credits in HS and all that) and because I wanted to stay with my friends.
23- Oh, also, A-levels aren’t required. It’s just what most people do. After GSCE, you could get an apprenticeship, go to a specialist cooking school, or anything like that.
41 – Thank you. Most people say, “Wow. Do you know everything?” I skipped 3/4 of 2nd and 100% of 5th grade, so I didn’t lose a lot of knowledge, and we moved in the first quarter of 2nd grade. Also, going to middle school, everybody is technically new, so they weren’t that hard.
As far as collegegoes, I will probably stay close to home. I want to study missionary outreach.
43 – Yeah, it must be nice to be able to skip parts of elementary, considering how repetitive a lot of the teaching is.
44 – You are what type of Christian?
45 – Tell me about it.
Gr. 1: We’re going to learn about GEOGRAPHY! This is a river…
Gr. 3: Our new topic is GEOGRAPHY!
Gr. 4: We’re learning about GEOGRAPHY!
My mom skipped a grade (I don’t remember which – 5th maybe?) but her mom made her repeat it after. In other words, no 4th grade and two 5th grade years. It wasn’t that she hadn’t learned it. My grandma had skipped 2 grades and had hated it, because no one was her age.
My school wanted me to skip an early elementary grade (1st or 2nd), but my parents were like, no way. I’m glad.
45 – But, as Kokonilly said, that means you have to go to high school and college all that much sooner. I think (especially between elementary school/middle school and middle school/high school) that there’s just such a maturity difference between 6th graders and 8th graders, as an example, that it would be really weird.
Then again, I can’t be talking…I did Algebra with a bunch of 8th graders when I was in 5th grade. But, even then, a lot of people didn’t take me seriously because I was so much younger then everybody else. And while it was sometimes cool to be the baby of the class, it was annoying sometimes too.
48 – I know! Nobody takes me seriously. Somebody said, “11×33 is 333, of course.” Then I said timidly, “Um, I’m not so sure about that.” “Well, prove it!” “Fine. I’ll get a calculator.” Calculator: 11×33=363. “HA! I told you so.” “Shut up.”
I want to skip high school. Or have it be condensed into a single semester or something. Most of my classes could go twice as fast without much damage to grades.
I think I want to major in History and Art, because I would like to become a curator some day, either historical or artistic I don’t know. Freelancing, I could do both. Colleges don’t really have a program for curatorial studies, at least most of the ones that I’ve looked into, so interning is in my future, which I look forward to.
I’ve never skipped a grade, infact I was a bit slow in the early years of my education. Remember the tortoise!
48, 49 – Yeah, taking a class with people older than you can be really annoying. When I start real college in the fall, I’m going to get placed in second level Calculus, because I took the CLEP for introductory calc in 12th grade. Consequently, I will be in a class full of people older than me, who will probably be resentful that the youngest person in the class is doing better than them (I’m not being arrogant, this happened to my dad as well)
When I was in elementary school, I took classes that were in upper grades, but I still stayed in the same grade. For example, in first grade, I took second grade classes (math, science, social studies, language, etc.), and I took some classes with my grade as well, (gym, computer, etc.). I’m glad I didn’t skip a grade, too.
52 – Finally someone understands! The worst part is when you DON’T know something and they make fun of you.
53 – That’s subject-acceleration. I’m still subject-accelerated in math and (theoretically) science.
54 – Yeah, I remember when I was in 9th grade, and my class wasn’t big enough for two math classes, so I got placed in the 10th grade math. I felt like they were just waiting for me to make a mistake so that they could tease me for it.
55 – They lurk in the shadows, waiting to prey upon you…
I’m planning on doing music in college. I have this irrational fear that I won’t be good enough to get in anywhere. Also, I don’t know if I want to go to a conservatory or go somewhere where I could also do academics.
Well you guys are talking about skipping a grade or going to next grade classes…when I was in 7th grade I was in Algebra (highest math for that grade offered) but I’m a dunce at math. I moved on to Geometry but ended up having to go back into Algebra since it was too hard for me, and the only class that fit my schedule was a 7th grade class. It wasn’t so bad though, the teacher thought I was more mature than everyone because of the age difference so she didn’t really check my homework as harshly as everyone else XDD
Right now I’m basically home schooled in math. My mom didn’t want me to get “too far ahead” of other kids in math (even though next year I’m probably going to take Geometry at a local high school) so we’re doing applied math right now. My mom comes in every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (that’s when I have math and teaches me.
During the first trimester I did personal finance stuff (horribly boring), this trimester I’m doing C# Programming (intresting, but often difficult) and next trimester I’m probably going to continue with the programming and then maybe some do some robotics or something.
Oh, and next year I’m going to go to the high school to take Geometry, along with some other kids from the other middle school in the district. Some of those other kids are from my soccer team, too, so it’ll be nice to have people I know in the class.
57 – There are some regular schools that have a conservatory as well. Johns Hopkins does, but that may not be conveniently located for you. (it’s in Baltimore)
61 – I’m going to attend a lecture there this summer.
62 – Really? I live within driving distance of there! *starts hatching a Kokonvention plan*
63 – Ooh! Kokon!
40 (Axa)- SCRIPPS PLZ
I want to go either there or Macalester; haven’t decided yet. For a while I was thinking of majoring in creative writing/English but now I’m not really sure. Maybe international relations or something historical or something.
I hate college.
65- *waves* Hey Penty!
65 – Aww, why? I personally think it’s a lot better than high school, because in high school you have to take all the subjects, but in college you can choose, so then you can just ake classes in stuff that you like.
67 – You’re in COLLEGE???
68 – That I am. I’m in a special one-year program in an art college this year, so that I can get experience in a lot of different types of art before I go to regular college and have to specialize in a certain type of art. (Actually, I’m planning on double-majoring when I go to real college, (art and computers) but the art major requires that you have a concentration in a certain type of art.) See post 3 for details.
69 – Wow. I never knew that. *feels very small*
70 – Don’t feel small, I’m the one who should be feeling too big. I think I’m the oldest person on the blog with a pseudonym.
71 – Not to pry, but how old ARE you??? I’m 11.
72 – I’m 19. *cries that she has less than a year of teenagerdom left*
there are so many different interests here i didnt know people wants to be chefs and pilots thats really cool
i love leading things, but i ran for student council the last 2 years and lost to dumb guys who arent leaders >[ maybe my school is sexist.
i want to go to brown, columbia, yale, or princeton [impossible] so umm idk, the “lowest ranking” college that i like is NYU so if i don’t get into these place idk what i’m going to do with myself.
i want to go to a big university and meet loads of new people and change the world
everyone thinks im unrealistic but i really can and will do a lot in my life i will i will i will
i like thinking about my future, in fact, i ramble about my future life more than i think about now because high school is full of stupid people and stupid things and a stupid school system that i really want to change but can’t.
all these teachers sit around and complain about kids not getting involved, well maybe if you LET US, and something CHANGED from us getting involved, we WOULD!
wow i feel strongly about this stuff.
my hands are typing faster than they have in a whilee.
73 – 19?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
*feels very, very, very, very, very, very, very young and small*
74 – There’s a website for students who are involved in politics and stuff that helps other young people to get involved as well. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the address.
75 – Yeah, I know. I’m scared I’m going to get forced to turn into a grownup. I had to file a tax return last week, for heaven’s sake! (Not that I have a steady job, I just ended up getting paid enough from my summer job to get taxed on it.) But I’m going to fight it to the end! *brandishes lightsaber* (I also have a mantra: Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional.) But honestly, don’t feel small because of me. I’m the weird, ancient one, you’re not the wee bairn.
I have to file a tax return! But it’s because I got a ton of money.
77 – How?
78 – Game show. Duh.
Dead, this thread is.
80 – I sense a great obsession with Star Wars in you, my young Padawan.
But yes, it is dead. But hey, not my fault I’m on spring break now and can’t regale everyone with stories of dorm life.
81 – Uh huh.
82 – You were the one who called me “padawan,” right?
83 – Uh huh.
84 – Ahhh, guess it’s just getting old then.
Okay, revive the thread! I’m actually not going to dorm when I go to real college. The place is only half an hour away from my house, and I’d much rather share a room with Kittymine than with some random stranger(s). My roommate from this year and I are okay, despite the fact that our opinions differ on pretty much everything except fandom, but that’s because we met on the way in, and requested that we be roommates. And I’m pretty sure most colleges don’t let you do that.
85 – Who? Kittymine?
86 – Kittymine is my younger sister, who frequented the blog a really long time ago on the first “Dissing Mr. Joe” thread. I’ve since convinced her to come back, so that she can participate in the Bunny Apocalypse.
87 – Oh. The Bunny Apocalypse has sort of died, hasn’t it?
Then again, so has this.
This one has, for the most part. But the Bunny Apocalypse thread is alive and well.
Well, here is my attempt to resurrect this thread.
A few questions if anyone is interested.
How do you all think the classes you’re taking are preparing you for what you want to do in college and beyond? Better said, how are you preparing for the college (type of, or specific) you want to attend?
Personally I’m aiming for the UC (various “University of California”) system or private colleges; my brother is studying at a private college in New York and he had very few core requirements, allowing him to take courses he wanted, and that applied best to what he wanted to do. I’m fine with taking a few math and science classes in the beginning, but in all honesty I’d rather focus on subjects which more directly interest me.
As far as preparing, I’m not sure how to answer my own question. I’m taking various AP courses and staying on the Honors track, but being something of a dunce in math and science is not helpful. As a junior taking Trig/Math Analysis I suppose it’s passable but I know so many people who are doing Calculus next year. Well I just hope my abilities in history and Language Arts can make up for that.
Is studying abroad or going to college out of state something that appeals to you?
I consider both, really. It’s too early yet to say. For the latter, it depends on where I go with Japanese, I’ll need to decide if I’m serious about it eventually.
90 – College out of state is certainly in consideration for me. (Although I’m a 7th grader, so it’s slightly early) Studying abroad for a while would be immensely cool, too. Maybe Spain, so I could work on my Spanish.
I’m going to try to get a master’s in art. Cornell or RISD. but i don’t know if that’s gonna happen. OSU more like. or SOU.
((double post))
-87 DIED? it’s anything but died!
91 – …You’re in 7th grade? I was in 8th! Hooray! *feels important*
So are there any other juniors out there beginning to freak out tremendously? today was spent angsting over various college related things. I want to know where you guys are thinking of applying, what you’re looking for in a college…not just juniors, anyone in high school, or before that even.
I’m looking at small private liberal arts colleges. I have a preliminary list and everything but I’d like to hear from you guys first.
95-i’m a senior and i haven’t done anything. god, thanks for making me freak out again >.<
i pretty much know where i’m applying (oberlin (LOVE), kenyon (LOVE but it’s really expensive), northwestern, osu (not going unless i get honors, but it’s way cheap for me because my mom teaches there), maybe k-zoo…) but that’s about it, i still have to get my letters of rec, transcript release, write all my essays, etc
they all take the common app though, thank god
except for osu
sry to double post, forgot about that
As I am in college, feel free to ask me questions about college/the application process. I go to a small liberal arts college and it is awesome here. You can take heiroglyphics and there is a dorm and club for people who like science fiction and fantasy.
51- The college that I am at right now has a museum studies program. It is a small midwestern liberal arts school.
Axa- Yes, I’m a fellow stressed Junior. And I’m looking for small provate liberal arts colleges, too. I have a list of about 20 schools my parents suggested, but I haven’t really done any research on any of them.
96) lol sorry for reminding you hehe. but ooh oberlin! I was looking at them a bit, they sent me a thing in the mail and I requested more info and thought they were cool.
98) hmm well mostly I’d like to know about timetables…I’ve been told a dozen times, it feels, but I’m still not sure. I mean when you start applying, when to send thing and when to expect letters back. and ugh I want to take hieroglyphics. also I have a somewhat irrelevant question but here it is…are there many people from the west coast at your school? Because there are a lot of good midwestern schools (such as those ebeth mentioned) but I wonder how I’d assimilate. I only realized recently that being in a landlocked state weirded me out a little.
100) it’s so hard right? I’m naturally overly nitpicky so this whole narrowing down process is torturous. Right now I’m looking at Scripps, Pomona, possibly Reed, Bard, Vassar…also Occidental, possibly Berkeley but likely not. And a few others…any of those on your list? To me it seems very likely I might end up at a college with a fellow Muser (MBers or not). We all learn best in certain environments, perhaps.
Um. Colleges. So far I’ve barely even thought about them. Which is OK, I guess, since I’m only a sophomore. -feels small and puny-
Actually most of my thinking about colleges happened about three years ago, and I didn’t think of any specific ones.
Axa- I’m not really looking at any schools that are “out west,” because it would be really far away from home and transportation would be a pain. Some of the colleges on my parent-recommended-list are: Wooster, Oberlin, Kenyon, Vassar, Carnegie Mellon (and several more). What’s weird about a landlocked state?
I think it would be flamablamablous to go to school with a fellow Muser. As more and more MBers go to college, it’s definitely likely that it might happen.
103) Ah that makes sense. My brother goes to Vassar and the transportation is definitely a pain. The campus is really nice from what I remember. I was thinking about Carnegie Mellon too….hmm.
As far being landlocked, I think it’s a weirdo psychological thing. When we went to New Mexico and Arizona, I kept thinking how I as surrounded by land on all sides. Which is irrational if you think about it, because if the borders of states were redrawn I wouldn’t feel the same way. I live kind of close to the ocean so I guess I’m just used to that? It might have been the vibe I got from those states as well. Bit of homesickness lol.
(104) Axa, even though North Carolina is a coastal state, I never lived this far inland before. It still feels weird to me. At least I’m near a couple of lakes. But I miss the ocean something dreadful.
104- My dad says he feels weird if there are mountains between him and the ocean. Maybe it’s sort of like that? I’ve never been anywhere that isn’t practically on the coast, not for any extended period of time. But I get weirded out by eastern Oregon and Washington, with all those weird smooth rolling hills and no trees.
96–k-zoo as in Kansas State?
101–I”m going to school in the MidWest. I wouldn’t say there are a lot of people from the west coast (ok, scratch that, I don’t think I’ve met anybody who isn’t either from a neighbouring state, or the state that the school is in…..) However, I fit in just fine, the only irritating thing is the endless questions about AK as soon as anybody learns I live there–and the never failing “Why[insert name of school]?”
I go to a school in the midwest and there are people from all over here. I have friends from Washington and Taiwan and Texas. In fact, there is a large Texas faction. They all migrate here from Austin.
I applied to Beloit, Carleton, Grinnell, Macalester, Oberlin, Reed and the U of M Morris. (Mostly midwestern schools minus Reed.)
103-i’m visiting wooster soon, actually
107-no, kalamazoo college. it’s in michigan
I think the schools on my list that are the farthest away from Pittsburgh are Macalester, Carleton, and Beloit. Mom recommended Kalamazoo, too, but it doesn’t seem so far away since I have a lot of family in MI and we’re there all the time.
107–oh, ok–never heard of it.
106– it’s exactly like that. weird! I mean I don’t got to the beach everyday but somewhat often and I never realized how much if affected me until I removed myself from it. hummmmm.
107, 108– interesting, interesting…thanks for your input. I may apply to oberlin, still unsure about it though. Did you guys visit all those colleges? Cause while I live near some of the ones I’m interested, others aren’t so close.
I got the info I requested from Reed and Bard today. Kind of an information overload, actually. My brother told me not to stress out about all of this and I’m like um it’s too late for that.
112 – Yeah, they do seem to overload you with info. I take it that you are one of those people who gets tons of letters from colleges because they all want to recruit you?
113) lol not exactly…I got something from oberlin and university of chicago randomly, but I requested stuff from everyone else because I’m majorly stressed about all this stuff and don’t want to wait until later in the year to get it if they would even send it to me!)
After taking the PSAT last year, I started getting hundreds of letters. I went through a whole garbage-bag of them a few weeks ago and only kept the schools I was actually interested in. The rest were shipped off with the recycling.
Speaking of the PSAT, our teacher passed out PSAT-practice-book things today. Yay! *headdesk*
I’m going to take the PSAT this year. I’m excited. But I’m sort of scared that I’ll do poorly. Not that I won’t get the material (well, maybe not the math; I’m not too advanced in math), but that I won’t be able to work fast enough.
116–Don’t worry, they’re really easy. I’m pretty sure the highest math they went up through was either pre-algebra or just basic algebra–if they even went that high. As far as time, it’s really not too big an issue–it’s more of an issue on the ACT, then the PSAT/SAT. If you just go through and do all the problems that you can quickly, and then return to the one’s taht were taking you awhile, you won’t spend all your time on one or two problems, only to find out that, oops, time’s up, when most of the problems are left undone. Also, on the reading, if you glance at the questions first, it’s usually helpful, and try to skim the passages…..Actually, my number one piece of advice, is take the practice test–that’ll give you a good feel for the time.
I’ve had the same problem as Pan, but I’ve kept them all, so I can see how much paper is wasted in the end. It’ll make an interesting research project.
re-taking SAT saturday…
wooster just sent me one of those shortened free apps. first one i’ve gotten from a school i’m actually considering
Take many many practice tests. Practice a lot. It certainly can’t hurt, and it’ll probably help. I realize that I’m being a complete hypocrite saying that because I barely prepared for PSAT’s or SAT’s, but still.
Are you guys taking the ACT? I think it is good to take both, that way if you do really well on one and not as well on the other but can’t retake it it balances out.
I’m taking the PSAT next Wednesday because all sophomores have to take it. Unfortunately, we aren’t eligible for scholorships because we’re sophomores. So I think I’ll take it again next year to perhaps get a scholorship.
All of my friends are scared of it. I took the SAT in 8th grade and got 1800 on it, so… yeah. I’m not worried at all. Particularly because the PSAT doesn’t have an essay section. YAY no essay!
College: I want to be either an Applied Mathematician or a Physicist when I grow up so I’m thinking about Johns Hopkins or California Institute of Technology. My dad wants me to go to the latter.
Long post, sorry!
ebeth: Do you live in Oregon?
woo I should get my sat results by the end of the month…I have to take it again in march no matter what I think, but I’m still excited to see what I got.
PSAT on the 18th…ugh so boring. I think I’m going to check that box that alerts colleges to begin to send stuff, cause I didn’t last time. yay for mail!
122) ooh exciting…are you thinking of any other places? Harvey Mudd is also in California and I hear they have a great program…course I’m the last person to be asking about math related anything. haha.
121-yeah i took the ACT
122-nope, ohio
ps, i got another shortened app…from st john’s! i’m excited.
that means the number of schools i’m applying to went from four to six though…
i visited wooster today. it was ok. their marching band wears kilts!
this was the first college visit i went to where friends were there…matt e and devin also went, since it was a day off school.
i think the list at this point (in some vague order) is probably…
oberlin
northwestern
osu honors
wooster/kenyon (tied)
i belieeeeve they all take the common app except osu. not sure though
oh well wooster doesn’t but i already filled out their app except for my most recent SAT score which i don’t have yet (no essay or anything, so it was easy)
PSAT was on Wednesday. I think it was relatively easy, though I always think I do really well on standardized tests and then the results come back and I completely fail. Ah, well.
125- Did you see Grant O.? He goes to Wooster, I think.
Oh, and kilts are awesome.
125-He goes to OU. i visited there too, but i didn’t see him. i will hopefully see him at the end-of-marching-season concert though…most of my friends usually go, just because there are so many people that graduated from our band and joined the OU band
let’s see. I’m applying to oberlin conservatory and possibly the college as well, cim, nec, peabody, rice, and colburn.
Re: PSAT. Took that last year. Am national merit semifinalist
130-we should go to oberlin together. and then you can help me become a conservatory groupie (i’m applying to the college, but i still want to be involved in music)
131 – yay conservatory groupies. I’m actually going to be in Oberlin in early december because I’m doing the early apply thing.. have to get my repertoire ready..
oh, and also, why do college essays take so freaking long to write? They’re only around 500 words each! I won nano last year! WHY CAN’T I DO THIS??
*sobs*
Because they’re boring and not interesting. Thus, it is impossible to concetrate long enough to get anything accomplished. Dang, I don’t envy you right now–I remember how miserable all that was…..
Quantity is much easier than quality. Always.
133-my question is more along the lines of “why do college essays take so long to start?”
:-! i really need to get working on those…
If you found a way to make them more interesting to write, they’d almost certainly be more interesting to read. That would have to be good, wouldn’t it? Just a thought.
137- how could you make college essays more interesting? tips, plz?
I mean, one of mine asks about what I want to have done in ten years. I don’t know what I want to have done by _tomorrow_.
138 – have fun with them! write about the things you like, rather than the things you think the colleges are looking for. don’t compliment yourself if you can avoid it, or insult yourself for that matter. I had to write one that was supposed to be page 217 of my 300 page autobiography. I just treated it like a creative writing assignment and it was a lot easier to do. just treat it like you’re writing for fun and you can go back to edit later.
also – hello again, museblog.
my college essay was about how I like stories in all things, literature, the stories and meanings behind math and science and stories in something else too but I don’t remember what. It is /true/. I love stories.
my parents are suggesting I take a look at the essays prospective colleges have and write some practice ones! fun.
SAT results: 1970
i’m so bummed. well I have to take it again anyway, I guess it doesn’t matter.
140 – mine was about milking goats and living in the woods. Good times.
141 – that’s a good score! It’s pretty easy to improve, so I wouldn’t worry too much. You still have a year to go, right?
my score was…. um 760 (reading) plus 630 (math) plus 610 (writing) which is… 2000 I guess. 1970 is good too. My act score was 32. 1970 is a good score, don’t worry about it. Besides, the colleges look at you as a whole, your essay, your grades, your scores too, your extra curricular activities.
142) well I’m a junior, so I have this year basically to take it I think? you’re not supposed to take it more than three times or something like that…maybe it would help if I actually studied. I was just really hoping to break 2000 but que sera sera
I don’t really remember a specific “college essay”….just writing and rewriting and revising some stupid essay on how I wanted to be a veterinarian and some bs (or at least partial bs, not entirely bs) about how I would offer all these low cost services for people, so they could afford to pay for veterinary services for their pets…..I used a variant ( much expanded *shudder*) on all my scholarship essays, and of course bits and pieces of this was used on all my college apps (but I”m not remembering them having a specific essay, just lots of short paragraph/essay questions….I dunno)
141–That’s not a bad score! I’d say it’s pretty good…..
I got 740 (reading), 700 (math) and, I think, 670 (writing), which is…..um….(my brain is still asleep) 2110 (I think).
143–hey, I got a 32 on the ACT too!
144 – You can also take it early on during your senior year. There’s an October test date that all colleges accept, and even a November one, if you’re not applying anywhere early.
141-my first score was a 1920. my second was 2040. you can easily improve
also wooo *joins 32 act club*
i love getting the exact same grade/score as other people on something. unless it’s like, someone i want to gloat at.
Re: SATs and ACTs: I got a 630 or something on math, and 590 (or something of that sorts) in reading for the SAT. But that was last year, when I was in eighth grade.
ACT? I got a 27.
148–nice, when I was in 8th, I got around 550 reading, 610 math. Never took the ACT when I was in middle school, but that is a good score!
149 – Wow, thanks! My friend got a 32, but he admits he just got lucky and guessed the majority.
I haven’t taken the SAT nor the ACT before, but I’m definitely not looking forward to them. (Actually, I have no idea if I’m taking the ACT. I hear it’s really different from the SAT — is this true?)
I’m taking the AP Spanish, History, and English tests this year, so I’ll definitely take SATIIs in those subjects at the end of the year, too.
But, overall, I’m really bad at standardized testing. I’ve never been good at it, and I have absolutely no idea why. Because I know the material. *grumbles*
143) argh that’s what everyone keeps telling me…I know it’s true but I still worry…
146) yeah that’s what I might end up doing, I’m going to take it again in march and see how that is. I’m not sure if I want to apply early anywhere though, so thanks for that info
147) thanks that makes me feel better. it’s mostly the math, I’m a math dunce lol
How many colleges did you guys apply to? I have 6-7 plus thee UCs…I think I might be overloading myself. My brother applied to 10 or 11 schools and it kind of made it worse on him. I’m just paranoid about getting accepted anywhere.
151–they are different, but I don’t kn ow about “really different.” The ACT goes up throught trig (a little, I was worried about that, but there really weren’t too many trig problems, and those that tehre were were easy ones). But also, on the ACT, there is no “guessing penalty” so if you have no clue, you are best off radomly (or preferably non randomly) choosing an answer, as there is a chance you will get it right and if you don’t, you are no worse off than if you left in blank. The SAT, of course, if you get the wrong answer, they knock off something like a 1/4 point…..stupid.
152–I applied to three, but was ninety-nine point nine percent certain I wasn’t going to one of the three…..and I’m not
152 – you’re only a junior! You don’t need to have your college list finalized at all, so don’t sweat it. Really. Enjoy your last college-stress-year.
But, in answer to your question, I think around 7/8.
152 – I only applied to three, and the third was because my parents forced me too–I didn’t even want to go there, they didn’t have my major. If you actually have the time to write application essays for 10 schools, then I don’t see why you couldn’t apply to that many. Unless the colleges know which other ones you’re applying to, I don’t see how it could hurt. Now whether you want to write that many essays is another question…
Re: SAT scores: 2370. 800 reading, 800 writing, 770 math. And got 800s on the SAT II Chem and Math II tests, and a 790 on the Lit SAT2.
Re: number of colleges: Between four and six. I’m not sure if I’m applying to two of them or not, and I may or may not be applying to two different parts of one college.
156 800’s!!!!! whoa….. Brings me back to the time when we were at the award ceremony things for those of us in 7/8 grade, and a couple of the kids had perfect scores in both math and verbal–I did good for that age (high 500, low 600) but nowhere near 800). That’s impressive! Congrats!
I didn’t do the greatest on the SAT II’s I took–I got in the 600s, I think, maybe only high 500s, I dunno. Don’t even remember which ones I took…..
I broke 2000 on the new SAT also, but I know that my score was lower than yours, Lizzie. Did you study a lot beforehand, or are you just a genius?
156 – Woah, 800s? That’s incredible, congratulations! How much did you prepare for that, Lizzie?
157 – The awards ceremony thing… was it Duke TIP? Because that’s what I took the SAT through in 7th grade. I got 670 math, 690 reading (these may be reversed, I don’t remember) and 700 writing. That’s… uh… 2060. As you can see, my mental math skills are severely lacking. >.<
Honestly, though, I’m pretty sure that when I take the SAT again in two years my score will be lower. I think that that score was partially luck and partially having really good teachers in middle school. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for high school, so far…
Actually, I didn’t study at all for either; I did take the SAT twice (that was my second time) and my math score went up like 50 and writing went up 30, but I think that the writing was because I knew what they wanted and the math was because I was being stupid the first time.
I took the SAT in 7th grade through TIP too. I think I got a 720 reading, 620 math (this was back in the olden days before they had writing XD), which was pretty good for not having any algebra. It’s all about the calculator, people.
160 – Aha. I only took it once, and didn’t study at all for it. After I got my scores, I decided not to take it again in the hopes of getting a higher score, since my score was pretty high already, and I wasn’t applying to any Ivy League schools anyway. But your score is still very impressive, even if that was your second time taking it.
Yeah, first time was 800 reading, 770 writing, 720 math. I was really pissed about the math score.
Also, whoa, new colors
Also also, what annoys me is that I’m applying to conservatories, which don’t care about my test scores or my AP credit or my GPA or my class rank (2 out of 590) wahhh
162 – Why did you retake it if your conservatories don’t really care about SATs?
163 – mostly for personal pride reasons – rationally, I wouldn’t have needed to retake it even if I were applying to regular colleges, but the low math score hurt my ego because I really should have done better than that, and my ego is very important to me
Also, at that point I hadn’t ruled out academic places.
163 – What exactly is a conservatory, Lizzie?
164 – I take it you were at the top of your class when you graduated? (I didn’t even get ranked. Hmph.)
165- A college, where music is the primary, or only, area of study. They probably just required an audition. My cousin went to the Royal Conservatory in England!
Currently, my class rank is 4. Do colleges care about your class rank at all? I would think they looked more at the GPA than class rank, right?
168 – I think they do look more at your GPA, simply because the class ranking is extremely inaccurate for determining a prospective student’s intelligence. If someone went to a school full of geniuses, then en’d probably be ranked lower. Whereas if en went to a school full of dimwits, en’d probably be valedictorian. The school I went to in 9th grade was really small, and had it stayed open, I probably would have been valedictorian, simply because my class only had 9 people in it, (less competition) and I was getting the best grades by far of anyone else. Anywho, class ranking is not very accurate.
Although GPA varies so much from place to place – schools add extra points for pre-ap / honors / ap classes differently, and so on and so forth. My school has preap, honors, and ap all on a 5.0 scale and everything else on 4.0. [school nearby] uses 6.0 for ap, 5.0 for honors/preap, and [farther-away school] uses 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0. So yeah.
168 (Purple Panda) – I actually think that depends a lot on the college. I’m sure all of them take it with a grain of salt (like if your HS is really competitive, being 100/600 is really excellent etc), but some more than others.
My highschool didn’t announce class rank (although I think the kids at the very, very top knew theirs, because they were in running for valedictorian/salutatorian).
My school did away with ranks because it benefits only a select few. It’s not practical for a school with as many students as mine. If your school does report ranks and yours is high, I think that is at least taken into some consideration with the admissions board, but GPA is definitely more important.
148 – Whoops, I meant 670in Math, 590 in Reading.
I HAVE OFFICIALLY FINISHED MY COLLEGE APPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy
Sorry, just had to announce that to the world.
162– o.0 perfect in reading? *is jealous*…also of your math score. I couldn’t break 700, I suck at math (compared to my other subjects).
.174
congrats! that is a major accomplishment! May I ask where you’re applying (you don’t have to say, I’m just curious.)
I finished five out of six college apps, and the only one left is pitt and they don’t require much anyway. I’m using an essay i already wrote, and i already sent in the teacher recs and stuff (not sure if i was supposed to, but i did…)
i might be applying to miami though
so did anyone apply for early decision? I know someone at school got accepted to cornell but I have yet to hear anymore on stuff like that. argh I’m so jealous/nervous/etc etc about all this! I want to be in college
Now I’m thinking about maybe linguistics for a major, but I still love history more than is normal or healthy, and I also still want to work in a library or museum (preferably the latter unless it was like the huntington library…)
And of course I still want to do writing most of all so I really don’t know!
what about everyone else…?
176- congrats and good luck! can you explain the process of teacher recommendations to me because I keep asking people and they just tell me “idk you just ask or whatever” and afshkgda I am ocd over stuff like this so I just want to know.
also I think I might add middlebury to my tentative list. what about everyone else? musebloggers who are juniors like me, what are the haps, where are you at with all this right now…
Nthanda (174): Congratulations!
ebeth (176): Yay, Ebeth! And if you’re ever going to visit Pitt….*winksmile*
Axa (177): That’s scarily similar to what I want to do. I love writing, but I’m not going to do much with that in college — currently, I go to an arts high school majoring in writing, and the director of the program advises us not to major in writing in college, because what we’re getting here is basically an undergraduate degree anyway. She suggests that, if we want to do anything with writing, we should revisit it in graduate school. I think I’m going to major in history, because of many reasons, but mostly because 1. I love it, and 2. I can learn it quickly (and have fun learning about it). I’m not sure what I want to do after that, but I’m interested in library sciences and editing.
…as far as junior haps, I think I’m sort of behind. I do have a list of colleges and I’m taking the SAT in a few months, but I constantly feel like I’m behind. Not sure why.
.177/178 – I would advise you guys not to worry about your majors so much at this point, but your list of colleges. So many people think they know what they want to major in, but then they get to college and completely change their minds. Try to find well-rounded schools that have an overall good curriculum, so you can pick once you get there. I recommend smallish liberal arts colleges. Some of the ones I looked at that have especially strong writing programs: Hamilton, Swarthmore, and Amherst.
Neither of you sound like you’re ‘behind’ in the process. Really, don’t stress about it too much your junior year. One of my friends didn’t start thinking about college until the start of her senior year, and she got in almost everwhere she applied.
Re: teacher recs –
Most colleges require 2 recs from any teacher who has taught an academic subject (not art, music or PE, basically). They prefer that these teachers have had you in junior or senior year. If the teacher has taught you for more than one class, even better. The teacher can either submit the recs online (if the school uses the Common App) or they can mail them to the school separately. There are some specific forms the teacher has to send, along with a general letter, I believe. Pick teachers who know you well, not just teachers who have given you good grades.
I kinda disagree with Zallie here……I would suggest getting apps in Junior year if at all possible. Despite how stressful deciding on colleges, filling out apps, and scholarships is, putting it off will be a lot more stressful. Then senior year, you’ll ahve it all hanging over your head, and way less time to do it in. The earlier a start you get on it. the better. Get ’em in, get ’em done, and then just concentrate on continuing to get good grades your senior year, instead of spending all your time having to worry about applications.
.180 – That seems a bit counterproductive. Junior year grades are so important, so I would think it would be difficult to focus on grades if you are also worrying about your applications as well, or even spending too much time doing college visits and trying to figure out exactly where you want to apply and what you want to major in. A little bit of reseach/visiting is sensible, but nothing would be worse than knowing exactly where you want to apply, but having your grades be too low to get in. Senior year grades – you have a lot more leeway. Colleges won’t like Cs or lower, but if you maintain a high level of difficulty and decent grades, you shouldn’t have a problem.
College apps are irritating. I would rather only spend one year focusing on them, as opposed to two. But, whatever works for you, I guess. I’m sure you ended up at a pretty good college.
.181 – *research
178– oh yeah I definitely feel behind, whether I am or not seems hard to determine…I’m worried about extracirriculars the most. argh all the compulsory testing really stresses me out. I’m retaking the SAT in march, I have sat 2 tests lined up (one in april, two in june) plus three ap tests in may. the ap tests always fall on or around my birthday which is always my idea party times.
And on writing, that’s sort of my idea right now as well, but as zallie is saying I’m waiting to see how things go.
my list keeps changing and is probably overzealous…I’ve done a bit of visiting but the colleges on the opposite side of the country are obviously not easy to get to.
179) thank you so much…I still need to talk to my school counselor about all this stuff but that is very helpful.
also I know not to worry overmuch about majors since I know so many people go in with one thing in mind and in actuality do another…it’s still fun to think about. most of the colleges on my ridiculous list are private liberal arts, including amherst.
my top choices are scripps or pomona, vassar, amherst. I’ve dug my own grave apparently.
180) I’ve downloaded a lot of this year’s applications/essay questions, I signed up for the common app and whatnot…I’m a bit cautious of starting to write the actual essays, but filling out the applications might save some time (except for the stuff like grades. ugh!)
so as far as that goes I kind of agree with both of you.
also, zallie: are you in college? I can’t remember how old you are…it has slipped my mind.
I don’t think you should be filling out applications your junior year. That is way too early. Mine were mostly due Jan of my senior year and I filled them out that fall-winter. It worked out for me.
.184 – This. Also, a lot of colleges may change their essay question etc. The data up now is for the class of ’13, not the class of ’14, which is what you are applying for. You also may change your mind over the summer and want those hours you spent back. No one expects you do to any apps your junior year. Really. You are most certainly not behind in the process. You are actually way ahead of just about everyone, I’d guess.
.183 – Re: Amherst. If you go to visit, make sure you check out Hampshire (which is nearby) as well. Hampshire is a little less prestigious, but it felt a lot more ‘homey’ to me and all students design their own major, which is really neat. I visited that area mostly for Amherst, but I ended up liking Hampshire a lot more.
GAPAs, are we allowed to post info about the schools we attend?/Are we allowed to say where we go to school?
College students are allowed to say where they go to school, but others, no. (MBers who are now in college have opted not to reveal where.)
well i got into wooster! but i probably won’t go there, unless nobody else gives me money. they gave me half off already but i’ll probably apply for a full ride
186- huh, we are? I’m at a Mysterious College that is one of these: Beloit, Carleton, Grinnell, Macalester, Oberlin, Reed or University of Minnesota at Morris. Some of those accepted me, some put me on their waitlist (one accepted me after that) and one denied me. That is, those schools are where I applied. I’m not going to be more specific than that.
186- Shouldn’t they then also have their names showing?
Ah, The Rules have been amended**.
187- Congratulations!
**This reminds me of something I saw something today that said “Guarantee!*”
got in to osu
and i learned today that earlham sends you a free t-shirt if you get in. i didn’t apply there though
.183 – Well, I’m actually only a year above you. I just got into my first choice school early decision, so I’m officially done with college applications. I guess I’ll continue the theme of not stating where, but I will say that my (future) school is an extremely good liberal arts college. I’m ridiculously excited.
.190 congrats ebeth! in my zeal to congratulate you I forgot how to spell your name lol. also a free tshirt that sounds pretty nice.
.191 ooh early decision! I’m so curious…congrats though! man I am excited to begin the process, even if it will eat up my life. argh now i really want to know! lol
but eee really congrats to everyone!
as for me augh stress stress stress I should be doing more extracirriculars
also most of my winter break will be spent preparing for finals ughhh
.190 – Congrats, ebeth!
.192 – Early decision is the greatest. I have had zero stress about college applications all year and I doubt I will ever have any. If you know where you want to go, apply ED. The only problem with that is financial aid, but a lot of top notch schools have really competitive finaid packages, so you should be okay. Hopefully, I will be! Haha, if only Phoebe still had that HP message board, I could tell you there! I think you were on there, right?
What extracurriculars are you in?
.94 heh the problem is that I’m pretty conflicted between the schools I’d like…that may change though, so thanks for the advice. And I’m in a couple of clubs, enter writing contests and do some community service, stuff like that, nothing really amazing though lol.
I remember hearing about that board but I never joined! I think I may have found it once…but I’ll say no more lest the gapas snip anything
.194 – Honestly, when you visit, it makes it a lot easier to narrow down your list. I must have visited 15 schools (many of which are in consortiums, but still) and I only ended up applying to two. After visiting some of them, I just realized I didn’t actually want to go there, no matter how good the school looked on paper.
So I got my acceptance email (letter should come next week) to Ohio Conservatory #1, where I did their non-binding early review! I went up there and auditioned a few weeks ago; it was cold and snowing and my Texan self was freezing, but I thought I played well and apparently they agreed. This makes me quite happy, as I now have a place to go to college no matter what happens at the next three auditions.
Eep, Junior year is too early to fill out apps, but not too early to look around. I learned this the hard way.
My advice is to make a scatter plot of every place you get into, rank on one axis and cost on the other. Then go to the one closest to the origin. I really should have done that. Now I go to someplace ridiculously expensive. Financial aid and scholarships and grants for the win.
Also I hear I’m one of the four female undergrads in the Physics Department. No word on Math, but it’s still rather depressing. Then again. I’m also one of the ten or so people who don’t go out and party every Wednesday through Saturday. We apparently used to be the number three drinking school. And then admissions didn’t like that. I don’t feel left out, though; more or less everyone here is chill. Hm, at what other times had I been in the 3% minority? Oh. The Lehigh-Laf game. Too cheap to go because I spent my money on Amon Amarth tickets instead. So worth it. Even though we won.
Speaking of admissions, never buy a shirt when you visit a college because then you’ll be guaranteed to not get in. Trufax. Actually I don’t know. We came up with that theory during a LGBTQIA meeting.
I’m rambling. I don’t like the lack of snow here. It’s not too far south of my hometown, but we barely get ANY.
Is it too early for me to being having admissions nightmares? …First I had one that I didn’t get accepted hardly anywhere, except for one college, but it somehow rescinded it’s acceptance. And then last night I had a dream I somehow failed an interview for one of my top choices I haven’t even started the application process! ugh I am so stressed out…I feel so behind.
195) oh I agree. I was considering one college, but the area wasn’t that great and I didn’t feel a connection with the campus. Even though it is a really good college I don’t think I could live there for four years.
196) very belated congratulations! I really admire all the musicians here who work so hard and actually audition. It seems like it would a nerve fraying experience…
My life plan has been updated. Now I really want to go to MIT and major in engineering, specifically robotics.

I’m so tired of hearing about how you have to prepare your college applications starting now, freshman year of high school. Does it really matter what summer camps I do or if I take AP WH instead of Civics next year so that I can take more AP classes total, or if I get three SAT books and do five questions from each one every night? I want to get into a good college, really, but this seems somehow a little over the top.
You’d think that there would be a counselor at the school to help figure out classes. Looking at the coursebook, there are so many classes that aren’t in the standard course of study most people take. For example, most people take WH freshman year, then Civics, then US History; the coursebook also lists AP US, AP WH, AP European History, African-American Honors Seminar, AP US Government & Politics, and many, many more classes that sound really fascinating. When am I supposed to take these classes? Do colleges prefer certain ones over others? Does it matter when I take them?
200- I’d say that taking harder, but interesting, courses will help you most. In my school, the kids who are planning to go to a good college take the AP classes, but only AP US and AP US Government & Politics are required. I’d say that the things you do do matter, but you shouldn’t start applications yet.
Do you have a counselor? If so, I’d make an appointment and talk to them, just say that you’re confused. The more they know you now the better you’ll feel later.
I only know a little more than you, but I’d say that you should take the classes you want to take. APs are more interesting, and more challenging, so you’ll win in the end. Colleges prefer ones based upon what you intend to major in, I think, but don’t worry over that. They might not take credit for any.
I recommend the Fiske Guide to Colleges, and unigo dotcom. Also, my school has these scattergrams that compare your ranking and SAT scores to the kids who got into schools and their rankings/SATs. So I know, if I applied right now, what schools I could get into. which is a relief, because there will be an ok school i can get into.
.200 – APs are a good way to show colleges you are capable of doing advanced work, but they aren’t a necessity to getting into college. However, if your school offers them and you feel like you could do well in some of them, by all means go for it. They are usually really interesting and most of the people in them actually want to be there, which is nice.
Don’t start looking at colleges yet. Just try to get good grades and maybe start listening to what your older friends are saying about colleges. You really don’t have to start doing anything college-related until junior year, I promise.
I’ve always thought SAT prep was cheating in a way, but that’s not a very common view, so I dunno.. You have to decide how much time you’re willing to spend to raise your score. If you test well, I wouldn’t spend too much time on it, because the SAT is honestly just a big scam and colleges look at a lot more than your scores when they get your application.
There is also a growing “SAT optional” movement. Some of the colleges I’ve looked into such as Bard and Middlebury (sooooo far out of my range, though) are part of that. I think they’ll take AP tests in the place of it or something like that.
201- Fiske’s Guide is indeed very helpful.
Hmm I think any seniors on the blog should be getting acceptance letters soon. Good luck to everyone!
A site that I’ve be looking at that is likely causing neurosis is “collegedata . com” (GAPAs it is statistic based and entirely innocuous)
It has academic and extracurricular profiles of the students accepted/denied/wait listed for a given college. Very interesting..somewhat reassuring. Well in part. A 5.0? Really?
The more involved in all of this I get the more I think none of it actually means anything. It’s an ends to a means I suppose but accepting that is, in itself a rather dismal prospect.
Good luck to all seniors!!!!! Three of the seniors got accepted to Gordon, UNH, and something else…
i did not get in to oberlin :'( so i’m about 88% sure i’m going to OSU now. in the humanities scholars program. the dorm is right next to the music hall and the oval, which is where most of the classes are. only problem is my mom’s office is right near there too, but she promised not to stalk me and said she would buy me panda express from time to time (which is also right around there)
200- I’m in AP US and AP Biology this year. I like US because it is all the smart kids in my grade and we’re all preparing for the test together. AP Bio is a different story… only 2 of us are actually taking the test, so the class is just pointless for most of the people there, and I don’t see how taking an AP class but not taking the test is going to help any of those people??? I don’t know if there is any way for you to find out if some of those classes are like that, but maybe if you asked your counselor how many people usually take the test every year, that would help. I’m finding it hard to stay motivated and do my work in a class where no one else does.
Has anyone taken the AP Bio test? how did you do? I’m getting a little scared…
I’ve got the SAT in May, too. I was in the 93rd percentile for my PSAT so I think I’ll do ok, but the SAT looks a lot harder than the PSAT.
P.S. It’s good to be back to MB… idk how much I’ll be able to be on these days just because I’m soo busy. They weren’t lying when they said Junior year is the hardest…
Elizabeth (207): My friend got a 5 on her AP Bio exam last year (in 10th grade), and she said it was ridiculously easy. She didn’t take a class–she just decided she wanted to take it (about 5 weeks before the test) and studied from one of those prep-book-things. I’m sure you’ll do well.
I’m taking the SAT in May, too. Along with AP US History, AP English Language, and AP Spanish Language. Should be fun!
I got into all four schools I applied to: two in Ohio, one in Boston, one in Baltimore. Will be in Ohio somewhere, but not sure exactly what school yet. I got scholarships at all of them, too, which is nice
Taking AP Lit, Vergil, Calc, Gov, and Eco this year. Fun.
*entices unwitting musers to thread* I’ll give you gold…lol
That being said, congrats all seniors! I’m not sure how you made it through the process which daily seems to be a little more daunting to me but you are DONE and going to COLLEGE that is amazing.
I spent a long times today reading various things on the New York Times’ special section for college admissions. They had various stories etc. I don’t know if it was reassuring at all…ore that informative…but it was uh, fun to read? Yep.
ha ha yall too smart, i want to go to the local community college ilisagvik,
maybe there’s a connection between smartness and muse readers?
Are there any other Juniors that have no idea where they want to go to college???
I know what I want to do (Pre-vet, then large animal veterinary science) and I’ll definitely go to Cornell for vet school since it’s the best vet school in the nation.
I don’t think I want to go to the same college for 8 years, and Cornell is really big, and expensive… So now I have no idea where I want to go first.
btw, is anyone getting massive numbers of e-mails, snail mail, even phone calls, from colleges? It’s getting annoying.
Collegeboard is invaluable for finding colleges that are relevant to one’s interests.
But to answer your question…nope I have a pretty long list of possible colleges by now. I feel liek I have too many reaches though…sigh
The mailings are annoying, especially since most of them are colleges I have no interest in…I’m looking at you, University of Saint Louis.
Elizabeth–I am currently in my freshman year of college for pre-veterinary medicine. I know you say that you don’t want to attend the same college for 8 years and that your heart is set on Cornell for vet school, but…..
Given how competitive it is to get into vet school, for one thing, there’s no guarantee that you will get in (don’t get me wrong, I’m sure you are very intelligent–you are a Muser–but vet colleges turn away so many applicants each year), and should definitely ahve some fall-back schools. Also, some colleges (I know of at least two) offer a form of early-admissions program. That is, if you get accepted into the program, you are guaranteed a place in vet school after you finish your undergrad (provided you meet the required GPA, and other requirements). Of course, this means you have to do you undergrad at the same school you attend vet college (and I don’t think Cornell does anything like that, at least it didn’t when i was applying to colleges).
However, given how difficult it is to get into vet school, I really think you should at least look into these, even if you ultimately decide that you don’t want to apply (although I recommend you do, personally).
Also, of vital importance (as you probably already know), get in as much experience as possible working with animals. Even though you’re interested in large animal, when you do get around to applying to actual vet college, they want to see a wide variety of experience. They want small animal, equine, food production, and if you have random exotic animals–all the better. Basically, they would like to see over a hundred hours of experience in each of these fields–it’s impossible for you to have too much.
And yes, the mails/emails/phone calls from colleges I got were definitely massive (and very, very annoying). They won’t end until very close to the end of your senior year. And towards the middle/end of senior year, you get calls from random colleges informing you that “next week is the last week to apply–apply now if you’re still interested!” And it’s like, um, I was never bloody interested in the first place, go away, please.
209–Awesome! Congratulations Lizzie!
212-Oh, yeah. The junk mail never ends, it seems like. >_< Completely random colleges that I’ve never even heard of.
One of my best friends wants to go to vet school, too.
I’ve been in college for almost one year now.
If anyone has any general questions (or questions regarding small liberal arts colleges) I’d be happy to answer.
No, I’m not telling you where I go to school.
Oh, fate is either cruel or has a great sense of humor.
Just randomly poking through colleges that offer interpretive (as in costumed interpreting, or park rangers, not languages) courses/degrees and a name that I actually recognize pops up….I spent a few weeks there one time for a blacksmithing conference that Mom went to. I remember that the rooms on one of the floors in the dorm (where we stayed) smelled really weird and that the computers didn’t work very well at all.
The part that’s funny is that I had jokingly said once that I was narrowing down my college choices, that that was one place I was pretty sure I’d never be interested in. >_< Be careful what you say, it will come back and smack you somewhere someday.
Though in case you’re wondering, I don’t think that’s where I’m going to go, or even what I’m going to end up doing, I just thought it was amusing.
I’m in the middle of a 2 year IB course, after which I will take a year or two off for traveling, volunteer work, and music stuff. I’ve got my sights set on the UK for university, though. Does anyone know Edinburgh?
216– I feel like they’re involved in an abroad program for another college I was looking at, but I can’t seem to remember which one. It looks amazing though! The year or so off sounds interesting too.
And to response to Jadestone from the random thread:
It is pretty small, but then again that’s generally what I’m looking for. I don’t know how far away I’m willing to go, though. It’s all very stressful. I could probably get over my weird phobia though…probably
GAPAs, could we perchance have a new thread? This one is a bit old…of course it’s not so very full of comments as to merit a new thread…,but it is still somewhat old
217- Eheh. I am not looking at any of the schools in my state because i want to be far far away. I’m not sure about Ohio at the moment because it looks a lot like IL (except their cornfields are pitiful ) and I really want a change in scenery.
Things I think I am looking for:
– Smallish, but larger than my high school (about 1200).
– More rural area, definatly not in a city (though it can have one nearish it)
– Has a study abroad program. I am set on doing a year somewhere outside the US
This thread *is* over a year old, and there are people on here that have to think about college now who didn’t before…
