Muse Academy May Day Ball (Part 1)

It’s the biggest event of the academic year — a celebration of light and warmth and spring and youth and (who knows?) romance, awaited all winter, longed for, laboriously prepared for, and now, at long last, here. The decorations are up, the food is ready, the musicians are practiced, rested, and in tune.

The ball lasts just a few hours in Musiverse time but might take all month to unfold in blog time. And before it begins, we hear, a very special event is scheduled to take place.

Now, in true RPG spirit, the rest is up to you…

I stood in the middle of the room, self-conscious in my long, silky blue dress, trying desperately not to fiddle with my delicate blue rose earrings or my carefully arranged hair. I noticed groundhog enter and crossed to her, glad to see someone else there.
“Hi,” I called across the grand ballroom. “Nice dress.”

Potato leek soup! I made some of that the other day. The recipe was enough to feed an army.

I could hear the music almost before I came in sight of the building. My dress had started out as a pattern from a halloween costume book, but the right fabric made it look designed for the occasion. Somewhat.
There were two other girls already there, and their gowns made my dress look, dare I say, rather silly. I sighed. Whatever. It’s not like I had time to go out and buy something anyway.

3- Lovely.

I wear a baby pink dress with no sleeves or straps, the skirt puffs up with frilly purple mesh underneath, that pokes out in an intentional lift. The skirt does not reach the knees. The fabric across the bodice is folded, creating an elongating effect. The bodice covers more of the left hip than it does the right, making the dress asymetrical, but balanced. I somehow hover over to Alice, feeling a bit dizzy in high heels as I have been sick for the past two months and was only revived last week.

(I always feel terribly self-conscious RPing in first person, and I have no idea why. Also, I just typed wnhhy. Clearly my current invalid state is affecting my typing rather a lot.)

Despite usually having nothing to do with MA due to frequent disappearances, I have managed to appear at the Ball. I have taken the occasion as an excuse to look decent, so I am wearing a long red dress and trying hard not to look like a complete fool. Looking around, I spy the food and make a beeline for it.

Wearing a tux, as requested, I walk into the ballroom. The first thing that strikes me is the size. The ballroom is huge! Tables on the sides are heaped with steaming food! Also, beautiful music is playing.
“What a grand ball…” I say aloud, “It seems like our planning paid off!”

I walk in after making sure in my flying saucer vehicle that my hair was in its perfect knot, as I had made sure earlier. I am tense, feeling I might not be on time. But then I spot that I am one of not-so-many people who came on-time-ish. As no one answered my question about CA time, I have no idea what time it is. Oh dear. Everyone is going to think I am a ninny.

2 – “Thanks!” I replied. “Yours looks great too.” I looked around and saw Vendaval, Logogeo, and Nora entering the ballroom. Logogeo had made a beeline for the kitchen, presumably to get first dibs on some food item. Vendaval was hovering near the doors. Nora, for reasons I couldn’t fathom, looked slightly embarrassed about her dress. “Nora!” I called. “I love your dress!” The room was filling rapidly. I turned around to see Penty in a long red dress that was reminiscent of her famous red scarf, heading for the food. Most of the boys were in tuxes, and most of them looked rather self-conscious. Except for ÃÃŸâ‚¬Æ’, that is. He had even worn a top hat. Which was flying through the air because he had ran towards the food. I deftly caught the hat, and followed him to the food table. Tapping him on the shoulder, I said “Lose something?”

I always felt overdressed, even if everyone else were wearing the same thing, dresses or tuxedos. “When will I play my songs?” I saw the food and almost collided into the rice cake bowl. I looked at myself and sighed. I didn’t wear any earings or necklaces but I did get a hair cut. I looked for Alice and saw her with Groundhog. (I wish I had recorded my music before to play!)

*sidles in* I am wearing a cream-colored dress with tiny rosettes and ribbons. In the old style, it is hideously ornate and and drags far below my ankles, sweeping the ballroom floor. Almost everyone is already present and I shudder, think inwardly, “That’s what tardiness does to you”! I make my way to the food table and catch sigh of IBCF and groundhog22 eating. I grin. Eating falls in the realm of things I know how to do profficiently. I grab a puffin ball and munch. Not bad. Or rather mostly harmless. Then I turn around and say to no one in particular, “Hello. Its like a dream come true, isn’t it.”

I enter the ballroom, glancing around. With tech and hockey and homework I haven’t had much time to post on the Blog lately, and while I see familiar faces I don’t know what’s been going on with everyone lately. Although I have put on a dress (sigh), my hair is down and I have no makeup on. Social gatherings are not really my thing, but since this is Muse, it’ll be sure to be much better.

I walk over to the refreshments table, taking a cup of lemonade. As I sip it, I glance around sneakily and stuff my high-heels under the tablecloth. The only good part about school dances is that everyone checks their shoes with their coats so no one has to wear them. My long skirt hides my bare feet, and they’re much more comfortable. I sigh in relief, and glance around to see if anyone noticed.

Fashionably late, as always.

Immidiatly, I spotted the food table and rushed over to grab some of whatever that jiggly yellow stuff was. It looked tasty, at least.

I walk around for a while, then approach the food. I’m afraid I have forgotten what there is on the table…could someone fill me in? It all looks lovely though, even though I have no idea what it is.

I try very hard not to think of the mountains of homework waiting at home…but the music is overwhelming, and I soon forget and move to the dance floor, looking for someone to dance with…

(I forgot to describe my dress. Its royal blue with turquoise (:lol:) around the edges of the sleeves, neckline, and hem. It has 3/4 length sleeves, and the neckline is kind of V-ish but wider and not very far down, and there is the same turquoise curved V-shape at the waistline. The end. )

I leave Beatlesrockr and go over to the food table. The puffin puffs are nearly all gone, thanks to IBCF. (I am not sorry to see them go.) I get a glass of lemonade and sit in a chair against the wall, watching the dancers out on the floor. All our planning paid off, I thought happily.

I slip into the Ball quite late, glancing around nervously and hoping nobody notices me. I am wearing a light lilac layered dress with a simple ruffle on the bottom.

I slip over to the snack table. A few hors d’ouevres lay on the table, and I select a cracker with cheese and munch it down. Then I look around and try and look for someone to dance to, which is rather hard due to the very low amount of boys at Muse Academy compared to girls.

The garden smells of flowers, and the sky is streaked with bright pink. For a moment I admire the beauty, but I shudder at the thought of what may be hiding in anything pink.

It’s daring but practical. You can see it a mile away — very good if you’re biking at night, assuming one would do that in a dinner jacket, which I suppose one wouldn’t. And assuming there were traffic to contend with, which, of course, here there isn’t.

You’re right, though. Everyone looks transfigured. And they’re dancing splendidly. You’d think Nthanda would have trouble with that train trailing behind her, but she’s managing amazingly well. You’d think she wore it every day.

Orange or chartreuse, the important thing is he made the effort, and I’m becoming rather fond of it as we speak. And, yes, there’s a real art to dancing with a train, not one I’ve mastered, I must admit. And doesn’t POSOC look grand in Qurtvian naval uniform? The Qurtvians do everything with such panache.

But oh, I do love a waltz. I can close my eyes and get lost in it. I always feel I’ve been transported into an old movie.

Why, thank you. I guess you’d say mid-century Victorian, with some Mediaeval touches. I’ve always wanted to try doing my hair up in a snood. And, I admit, these sleeves are a bit impractical, but I love the way they trail.

Yes, the Pre-Raphaelite look never goes out of style.

Now, what a lot of people don’t understand about waltzing is that it’s not a series of steps — it’s a frame of mind. Once you’re in the “waltz zone,” anything you do is a waltz. I suggest that we start off conservatively, with small steps. Then, once the music revs up a little, we can start traveling and show off a little. Agreed?

That’s true about waltzing. It really is a zone. And you can always hum 1-2-3 in your head if you get lost. As long as you’re there for “one” you can always fudge the “two-three” — which I end up doing a lot trying to move these size 11 feet in time.

(185) Who knows, maybe they’re better with the feathers. Who’d have thought they’d be a hit? Speaking of food, the wungs have really outdone themselves! Paul has such great cheese connections, too, I’ve never seen so many varieties. But some of the best things were brought by the MBers. I couldn’t resist sampling while I was in the kitchen. Bookworm’s shrimp and vegetable dumplings are amazing as are the Cuban sandwiches TGYPWYA brought (excuse me, TGYPTYTDW for the occasion, I believe). The macaroni sushi turned out much better than I would have expected.

(210) Actually, it seems I’ve become addicted to waltzes ever since that unfortunate incident. Maybe my immune system is on the defensive.

Oddly enough, I sang “You Fill Up My Senses” in a friend’s wedding many years ago. At his request, I hasten to add. It does harmonize nicely. And this Celtic interpretation the band is playing certainly gives it a twist. Perhaps it won’t be too painful for you.

My favourite waltz is the second movement of Tchaikovsky’s 6th symphony. It’s sweeping, gracious, the melody is beautiful – except it’s in 5/4 time, and you can’t dance to it without falling over.

(268) If you don’t mind trying an unconventional approach, the spit of Garden Wungs takes out just about anything. There’s probably one or two on the rooftop who could be coaxed into cooperating. Just be sure to wipe it off within a few minutes or the stain won’t be the only thing to fade.
