Life, the universe, pies, hot-pink bunnies, world domination, and everything

Yay, I’m totally in!
Wow, I think this was the last RPG I actively participated in (aside from a BA reboot) and it’s been three years… Time to re-work my character.
So are we still going to go with the basic setting of a school for young demigods of all mythologies called Antediluvian Academy, located in Bermuda? (I think that location was pulled out of the air for being neither Europe nor North America precisely, but being pop-culturally associated with weird things is a bonus. Also, nice weather!)
Kai — Bermuda sounds acceptable, yeah. This is FICTIONAL Bermuda, though! Sort of like real Bermuda: but better. I think the basic concept is good still~
Anyone want to set limits on available gods? For balance, for numbers, for power balance, etc?
The earlier RPG featured (looks up) Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Native American, Taoist, and Shinto mythologies, but others would be welcome, too.
I meant more like…nobody can play God X’s children because they took a vow of chastity / would be OP / etc, the like, haha. But we’re only inspired by Percy Jackson, not DERIVING FROM: so I dunno~!
Well, in Greco-Roman mythology, Athena/Minerva, Artemis/Diana and Hestia/Vesta are the virgin goddesses, so any children of theirs wouldn’t be biological, but they could be created in other ways– we had a Hestia child in the earlier RPG who was shaped from the ashes of the sacred fire, and the Percy Jackson series has a daughter of Athena who was born from her thoughts– since Athena was the goddess of handicrafts, it would also make sense for her to weave or sculpt a human figure and then bring it to life.
I would like to note that it’s probably a good idea to handle children of any currently practiced religions extremely carefully.
Aside from that, I basically trust everybody here to be careful about power levels and so forth, and to handle them tastefully, so as far as I’m concerned, go forth and create as you will.
Goodness, this feels like it was a lifetime away. No doubt I have my fair share of cringe-worthy posts on the old threads. A reboot would be nice!
I would like to use basically the same characters as I did before. I just want to update their personalities a bit and make them a little older. Recap: they were the twins Skuggi and Veikindi, and they were the children of Hel, Norse goddess of the doomed dead. She’s physically incapable of having children biologically, but she essentially created them out of cremation ashes and various remains.
Is this OK? Also, the demigods still have powers based on who their parents are, right?
It seems okay, and yes, they do.
I’m also leaning towards bringing back reworked old characters, at the moment. Funny, I knew which ones I’d brink back, and then I went back and reread everything, and I’m tempted to resurect all three of them now. I’m fairly determined to stick with just one or two, though, and I might wipe the slate entirely clean and find new gods and characters.
Now, what are we doing for plot? Underworld gods rising against those of the Upperworld? We never got around to that one. I like the idea of several gods from different religions trying to work together and arguing about everything.
I like your idea. But what gods taking sides based on their aspects rather than geographical locations? For instance, gods associated with chaos v.s. gods associated with order? (A surprising number or Underworld gods could arguably go on the side of order, or either one.)
SFTDP. That should say: “what about gods taking sides”. Sorry.
Oh, that’s a good idea, too. Or maybe the trickster gods band together to pull the ultimate prank? Which involves unleashing monsters or something as a distraction, or possibly even centers around the school somehow.
Let’s see, who are the trickster gods anyway? Loki, Coyote, Kokopeli, Hermes… Anyone else?
Ooh, that’s a good one! Could demigods who are kind of trickster-ish themselves without actually being the children of tricksters still ally with them? For instance, my characters are the children of Hel, but could Veikindi side with his grandfather to help them with this prank?
Yeah, I don’t see any problems with that. I’m sort of in favor of staying away from the ‘team evil’ idea we had last time, and spending more time working with each other.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Sorry if this sounds pretty n00bic, but… what exactly is going on?
This is a role playing game where we create characters who are the children of mythological gods, attending a special boarding school to learn the use of their powers.
Oh. Okay.
I do have some fictional goddesses from some of my stories, do they count, just because they weren’t in original mythology?
I think we’re trying to stick to real-world mythologies.
Okay then, is it possible to be the daughter of Bastet, then? Or is that taken?
I think we had four of those last time. Go right ahead.
You can certainly be the daughter of Bastet, and there’s no rule against having the same godly parent as another character.
Righty-ho, shall we get the ball rolling? Are people ready to introduce their characters – perhaps we should list the name, parent, age, appearance, personality, background? I think that’s roughly how the profiles were set out last time. Then we can maybe decide on a vague-ish direction for the plot (post 6 + replies have started this somewhat), then see where it goes from there!
I’m thinking of coming up with a completely new character, hope that’s all right.
Sounds fine with me. I’m still debating between two and a half characters, which one(s) I want to reintroduce. Also debating coming up with something new. I’ll have to look in to interesting deities, in case one of them catches my eye.
Anyway, I’ll come post my character whenever I figure them out.
Okay, I guess I’ll go first with posting my character profiles…
Name: David Belrose
Age: 13
Parents: Creation of Hephaestus, Greek god of fire and metalworking, based on the genetic patterns of Marc and Amelie Belrose, geologists.
Appearance: Medium height, tanned, straight black hair, light brown eyes. Thin but fit.
Background: The Belroses were a team of famous volcanologists, traveling all over the world to study different volcanoes. While they enjoyed their work, they had great difficulty having a child, which stirred the sympathies of Hephaestus, who saw the couple as his nearest thing to modern worshipers. Hephaestus directed both Belroses to throw locks of their hair into Mount Etna, and created a child in his forge, born from lava but to all appearances the son the Belroses would have had normally.
David grew up traveling alongside his parents on their expeditions, which helped to hide the use of his abilities. He’s been lucky enough to encounter his “godfather†on several occasions and gets along with him well. When he became old enough, his parents decided to send him to Antediluvian Academy to learn to better use his powers and meet other children his age.
Traits: David’s lived in many different countries and seen some very cool things, but never for very long, and was mostly homeschooled by his parents, so he isn’t used to having friends his age. As a result, he seems shy, but enjoys talking about things that interest him. He loves technology and building machines, especially radios, and is very good at figuring out how machines work and how to fix them—McGuyvering is his specialty.
David is totally immune to damage from heat and fire, and made a hobby of walking on lava while visiting volcanoes with his parents. His body temperature is several degrees hotter than normal. He has not yet demonstrated any ability to control fire or lava himself, although he may eventually. He enjoys reading comic books and is a very big Tintin fan. David has learned a little of several languages but is most comfortable with French—he worries that his English won’t be good enough to communicate with the other children at the school.
(I want to bring my teacher character Dr. Korlin back, too, but I have to go to bed at the moment, so I’ll just do my student character for now. I’m not sure if his origin sounds too weird…)
Ooooh, are we doing character bios now?
Name: Mina Weatherspoon
Daughter of: the Egyptian goddess Isis
Appearance: Medium height, short black hair, darkish complexion, brown eyes.
Powers: No specific powers, no time travel, no cool windy thing- just vague magic-y things which I’ll clarify as they become needed in the story
Personality: Polite, kind, cares a lot for her friends. Easygoing, relaxed, tends to not think about her problems too much and will only directly face a situation if backed into a corner.
Backstory: Has lived happily at the school (this is a demigod academy thing, right? Correct me if I’m wrong) for a very long time. She’s made good friends with most everyone. No angst here, no kidnappings, no tragic deaths of parents, no dramatic flashbacks. Sorry, everyone.
((Yes, it’s a demigod academy, most students last time were coming for the first time as early teens.))
What a pretty name! My cat, Mina, approves.
I’ll post my character shortly. Basically it’s an updated, less far fetched version of Kali, from last time.
Um, okay, I guess it’s time to make my character. Do they have to have human first names or last names? Just in case, I’m adding an optional name;
NAME: Kestoruna (Kat Coulissen)
DAUGHTER OF: Egyptian Cat Goddess, Bastet (Other spelling is Bast)
APPEARANCE: Black hair, brown fur all over. Cat ears, face, and tail. Golden eyes. White dress. Cat feet, human hands. Likes to wear jewelry.
POWER: Can speak to all animals.
PERSONALITY: Basically cat-like in every aspect. Very quiet, likes staring and blinking casually. Loves to make jokes, and make people laugh. But, is still scared of doing something wrong, so she doesn’t really get too much into things, or do something without someone telling her exactly what to do.
BACKSTORY: Was born along the other gods, and lived in Egypt, under the queen reign of Isis, until she was 14. Then was sent away to the academy to strengthen her powers, and to just learn.
Depends on their upbringing– having a character like this who was raised by their godly parent have an exotic name makes sense, but we might expect a more conventional name for someone who grew up among humans. It makes sense that she might have a more normal-sounding alias to use while attending school in the “real world” just in case she has to get a passport or credit cards or that kind of thing.
((Being afraid to get into things isn’t very much like my cats.))
((It’s very much like me.))
Name: Roxanne “Roxxy” Madden
Daughter of: Nemain, an aspect of the Irish Triplet Goddess of battle, strife, and sovereignty MórrÃgan
Appearance: Roxxy is about 5’6″, with thick black hair cropped very close to her neck and bangs sweeping over her left eye. She’s a bit skinny for her height, but definitely more muscular than people assume her to be. She has a very angular face, longer than it is wide, with thin lips and a pointed nose. Her eyes are very light blue, almost like a neon sign. She had thin fingers but calloused palms.
Her clothing style is very minimalist. Typically, she’ll have a monotone t-shirt on with faded blue jeans missing their knees and black skateboard shoes. She has both ears double pierces – the bottom earrings are wolves and the top are crows – and her left ear also has a bar through the top.
Powers: Roxxy inherited her mother’s ability to turn people on each other with a single battle cry, but leaves the harvesting of souls to the gods. She’s also good with weapons – identifying and using them. Finally, she can tip the balance of a battle, but cannot force an outcome. Even if she favors one side, if it is fated to lose, it will.
Personality: Prickly and a bit of a loner, Roxxy typically works towards her own self-preservation. She does not make friends easily, nor does she want to, but sometimes friends will make her. She is fiercely protective of a few people, but enjoys a good fight if the time comes. Roxxy’s humor tends to consist of crude jokes and sarcasm, usually at the expense of another student.
History: Not born so much as created, she was remolded by Nehmain from the soul of a dead soldier and placed in an orphanage to hone her skills. When she was old enough, about ten, her “mother” revealed herself to Roxxy and told her about her history, then sent her to Antediluvian Academy, where she’s lived for the past seven years.
Other: She does have a bit of an Irish accent, but it’s not overwhelming.
Dang it, why’d I choose Bastet…
Character! FInally.
Name: Kali/Ichtaca
Parents: Itzcoliuhqui & Itzpapalotl, Aztec god & goddess of darkness and destruction, primarily.
Backstory: After many years of misdeeds, the other Aztec gods got fed up with Itzcoliuhqui and Itzpapalotl, and decided that this time, banishment was not enough, and they would have their very powers stripped from them. To prevent this, they worked together to make an obsidian form to hide their powers inside until the other gods were less bent on vegeance. The process of hiding their magic in the form, however, transformed it into a human girl. She was sent to live with a foster family until her creators needed their powers back, with no knowledge of her past.
Physical Characteristics: Black hair, dark eyes, fairly unremarkable appearance, overall, except for her teeth, which are pitch black. Her skin looks normal, but it feels like it has bone directly beneath it no matter where you touch. She can see well in the darkness, and never grows tired. She eats, but would probably be okay without food, too.Â
Personality: She’s not too good at empathizing with those around her, and generally doesn’t tend to make friends easily. She has a tendency towards petty cruelty.Â
Powers: She has an obsidian band around each of her wrists, one etched with a butterfly and the other with a curved sword. They act as the locks which keep the powers inside her, and are impossible to remove. She can channel the power through them, which gives her access to immense destructive power, in theory, but if she uses more than a very small amount of it, she starts getting dizzy and disoriented, and the more she used, the worse the symptoms get, right up to amnesia, blindness, and comas. All symptoms are temporary, but extremely unpleasant.Â
One thing she can do without any trouble is to turn handy objects into either a curved sword, or small knives, and she’s got great instincts with either weapon.Â
