PPanda’s friend and my friend’s sister is absolutely obsessed with history. I think it’s interesting, but she knows absolutely everything. I can tell that she will turn out similar to that famous historian in Holy Grail.
I like the stuff about the Holocaust. Es muy interesante.

brillo.HIstory…well. Nope sorry, I don’t know what muslims contributed to society. THOUGH I have been studying the Greek unit at school and I know what they contributed.
Astronomy:
Aristarchus proposed that Earth and all the other planets revolved around the sun(although the other greeks thought that was crazy).
Eratosthenes calculated the earth’s circumference(or close to it).
Geometry:
Archimedes accurately estimated the value of Pi. Yay fer pie too.and a whole buncha other stuff but I’m too tired to type it out.

Juliette (8) is right about the big picture: while Europe was in decline during its dark ages, Islamic civilization was flourishing from India across North Africa to Southern Spain. Muslim scribes and libraries preserved Greek books for centuries while Europeans forgot them, and Muslim scientists improved on Greek astronomy and medicine. If I had to pick a place to live in A.D. 1000, Muslim Spain would be high on my list of candidates. (The rest of Europe would not.)
Wikipedia, while far from authoritative, has a lot of useful information. Check out the articles on Averroes, Avicenna, Islamic Astronomy, and algebra (invented by a Persian mathematician named Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi). in December 10th, 2006 @ 10:516. I hate hearing about the holocaust. I am so bored of it. A lot of people were put into forced labor and then killed. I’m over it. (I have Jewish ancestry too, so don’t think I’m being insensitive).
10. Wikipedia is as authoritative as a traditional encyclopedia. So says the New Yorker, which, in my opinion, is about as authoritative as you get.
Here’s a history question: 200 years ago, people worked five days a week to make food and other necesities for their families. New technology has made food production much easier, so in theory, people don’t have to work nearly as hard. Yet, most people still work five days a week to provide entertainment and recreation. Have we really improved our standard of living all that much if we are still working almost as hard as we were back then?

in December 11th, 2006 @ 15:20On the subject of the holocaust, i’d just like to say that i feel really sorry for cheese. One day we were talking about famous ancestors of ours and she mentioned that hitler was somehow related to her great-uncle or something. Well now leo won’t shut up about it and he keeps telling everybody he meets, etc. I mean, come on we live in frickin [snippity snip], it is not a place where you want to keep telling people how you’re related to hitler.
As for holocaust jokes…jeeshers, i’m friends with weckstein. I can’t even begin. Well first of all, he wants to be an evil dictator (who doesn’t?) but he seems so dead serious about it that nobody’s sure if he’s joking or not. He quotes stalin and does the hitler salute randomly and stuff like that. Most people assume he’s joking, some just assume he’s crazy. He’s made so many jokes i can’t even begin to tell them all. And he’s not dead yet, so i guess people have gotten over it to some extent.
Idk. Whatevs

20-1984 stole everything from Zamyatin’s We, which is a much better novel. However, it’s more adult and more scary.
Holocaust jokes just aren’t that funny. I’m serious. They’re not. You can tell them, but they aren’t funny. You can tell jokes about Microsoft and the Falklands, but not the Holocaust.
Why wasn’t New Guinea one of the cradles of civilization?

24-MI history (surprise). But then i moved to Ohio. Oh fun. So now i don’t know the history of the state. But then i’m moving back after college, so whatevs.
And peoples, honestly judging by your reactions i’d almost have to agree with Fridgey. I mean, i agree, the holocaust wasn’t funny at all in itself but really you’re forgetting how humour can heal so much better, and PP, where i live has a huge jewish population too and you’ll find a lot of them watching borat and finding it highly amusing. Honestly, i think the people who are most touchy about political correctness are the ones farthest removed from the issue.
But this isn’t hot topics (dang, i’m getting my threads confuzzled…)
29-that’s just stupid. (not you liking russian history, that rocks. i mean not believing the holocaust) That’s just denial, not wanting to accept it.
I had MI/randomness history in seventh, revolution to civil war in eighth, then i moved and had world history, now i’m in AP US history which goes revolution to present then i’ll probably take…what do juniors take…i think it’s gov/economics (that’ll be a fun class. especially since it’s featherstone) then AP European history (that’ll be even more fun, whoever teaches it) Although you only need two credits of history to graduate. But i like history. I’ll probably take four years plus mebbe a bit.

in December 12th, 2006 @ 08:4924 – I’m not in 7th grade yet, but we study a bit of Pennsylvania history every couple of years in Pennsylvania.
32 – We had a whole Explorers unit last year and I think the year before that, as well. It was fun. I know a lot more about them, that’s for sure.
And we studied U.S. history. I did a whole thing on schools. I forget most of it. If I can find that poster I made….. *checks around* No, I can’t. But I’ll find it eventually!!!!

36-Sometimes, yes. You can get into more detail, but it does get a bit monotonous. But then you’re also very familiar with the places and political figures, etc.
Yeah, i agree about how focused we are about ourselves (but then, what else is new?). If i were to move to say…oh…NZ (♥ ♥ *wishwish*) all that i learned about US history wouldn’t help me terribly much.
Mein pater took a load of random history classes in college, and kept all the textbooks (or most of them anyway). So we have big books about like the history of China, the history of Russia, WWII, Britain, whatever. And since he’s a total history geek, he’s always buying new history books too. So if i wanted to learn about a diff country, i’d be all set.

I still like five-hand better. But anyway, Texas would have been taken over by somebody, if not the americans than either mexico would have recaptured them or a european country would have taken them (probably brit). Isn’t that why they wanted to be part of the US, for protection?

11/42- this sort odf occurence is exactly why you have to keep hearing abut the holocaust.
I saw a really scary political cartoon that was a graveyard and the tombstones were horrable events like the holocoust and they had dates and the phrase never agin on the tombstones. and there was a tombstone by an open grave that said darfur on it and there was no end date….
44- muslims improved medicine alot, don;t remember quite how and they improved navigation and introduced hindu numerals (base ten number system) to europe.
and on the amrcan history curriculam in general-
yes, amrican history courses focus too much on america, but it also focuses alot on eurpe. what it needes is too reconize that there are seven conteninent and that six of them have been inhapited for ages.side point- i was flipping through my science chapter and i came across the chapter on evelution, and as a joke i asked my mom if she wuld sue and she said only if my class skipped it.

So in history…we had a pretty sweet debate over secession today. I was thomas jefferson (we just pick random people from history, it doesn’t matter if they’re dead
) and i was anti-secession. It was like 7 anti to 3 pro. And Whittig annoyed me. He was King George III and he was pro and kept going on about how Britain would back the south. And we were like um, no. A-because once the southern economy falls apart (which it would have) there will be no profit in it for Britain and they’ll either just take it over or stop backing it. and B-there are a lot of brit abolitionists, and the gov won’t/can’t support what the people are against, at least not for long. Whittig didn’t seem to get that. he was just like “i am king and i say britain would back the south” But other than that bit it was a moste excellente debate. Chappelle says we’re a very economical class, and first period’s very political. So he tells us what they said and tells them what we say and it all works out.
49-she means the romans. We’re watching Sparticus in latin. good movie. Not as funny as a funny thing happened on the way to the forum and not as scary as labrynth but certainly more relevant than dragonslayer and way more interesting than the documentary about the trojan war. (although parts of that were interesting. But most parts were extremely boring)

(3) It may be too late but they also made lots of contributions to algrebra. Also, the poet Rumi is still one of the top sellers of all time, up there with Shakespeare, the Bible and Agatha Cristie.
I would like to learn more about African history. Like, before Imperialism and things like that.

in December 15th, 2006 @ 15:3837- I’m just saying, as long as we were recognized by other countries, we could have borrowed money and used resources from other countries.We would have used te borrowed money to by things and resale them for a profit, which we could use to pay off debts and other junk. Thus, we would make money and Texas could survive as it’s own country. We’re also the only state that could divide itself into 5 states if we wanted to.

Most Americans are very well versed in history, their own and other people’s.
52-Want a summary? People evolved. They spread out. They separated into tribes and countries. Technology stagnated. Africa was colonized. Done.
That’s it. The next person who makes an unsupported comment about Americans’ negative characteristics will be shot. Twice. I give up. What many Eurocentrics don’t realize is that Americans try very hard, work very hard, and put up with a lot of crap from European kids who think they can criticize vast numbers of U.S. adults who have more education and work harder than they do. I’m not mentioning names.

The other day all I saw was final Jeopardy, and I’m assuming it’s the one you’re talking about. The final “answer” was something along these lines:
Against divided Democrats, this man won the US presidential election with the lowest percentage of the popular vote in history.
I screamed “If they don’t know it’s Abe Lincoln, they totally don’t deserve to be there,” and the returning champion got it wrong. I guess he wasn’t paying any attention in eighth grade history. Is that the one you were talking about?
